Ayurveda sees every person as unique. Instead of one diet or lifestyle for everyone, Ayurveda works with three constitutional types: the doshas. These are Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.
Each dosha is a combination of elements (air, fire, earth, water, ether) and determines how your body and mind function. Knowing your dominant dosha allows you to choose foods, spices, and routines that bring you into balance.
What are doshas?
In Ayurveda, a dosha is your body's natural energy type. Think of it like your personal "operating system" that controls how your body and mind work.
Everyone has all three doshas within them, but usually one (sometimes two) is dominant.
- Vata = air + ether → movement, breath, creativity
- Pitta = fire + water → digestion, metabolism, focus
- Kapha = earth + water → structure, stability, calm
When a dosha is out of balance, issues arise such as restlessness (Vata), irritability or inflammation (Pitta), or sluggishness and weight gain (Kapha).
The three Ayurvedic body types
Vata – The creative energy
Characteristics:
- Slim, light build, dry skin, cold hands/feet
- Quick, creative, enthusiastic, but also easily restless or anxious
- Irregular appetite, sensitive to stress, light sleeper
Pitta – The driven perfectionist
Characteristics:
- Medium, muscular build, warm skin, sharp features
- Focus, determination, strong digestion
- Can become easily irritated, critical, or overheated
Kapha – The steady nurturer
Characteristics:
- Solid, broad build, calm, thick skin, dark hair
- Caring, patient, loyal, strong immunity
- Tends toward sluggishness, weight gain, mucus
Ofcourse these are a few characteristics and there are more tools and knowledge to discover a dosha.
How to discover your dosha
Many people are a mix, such as Vata-Pitta or Pitta-Kapha. Want to know your dosha? Online tests can help, but I always recommend seeing an Ayurvedic practitioner. They can give you a much more accurate reading and personalized advice that fits your unique body and lifestyle.
